DIY Valentine's Day Gift Boxes (1)

Hello! Today I’m sharing these fun Valentine’s Day gift boxes along with a free PDF pattern. These small treat boxes make the cutest gifts. They can be filled with sweets, candies and other cute little treats.

Create these boxes with colored cardstock or decorative scrapbook paper. For my boxes I used paper from the DCWV paper stack “Sweet n’ Sassy”. Most paper stacks come with a few pages of decorative journaling pages which are perfect for using with these boxes. Decorative tags can be placed in the cutout section of the box lid. You can also use clear craft plastic and give a fun peek inside!

The paper stack I was using came with tags that read “love you most” and “I love you”. I used these along with coordinating paper for the lid and base of the boxes.

Step by Step Tutorial

Step One: Download and print the free PDF pattern. Be sure to print at 100% for the boxes to be about 3″ x 3″.

Step Two: Use the pattern to cut out the box pieces from your decorative paper. The paper for the boxes should be sturdy (65lb – 110lb). The paper found in the DCWV paper stacks works well as it is usually nice and thick. Bazzill cardstock is a great solid colored paper.

Be sure to cut out the small backing piece that goes behind the cover. This can be made from scrapbook paper or clear craft plastic. For a few of these boxes I used the decorative journaling tags that came in the paper stack to place behind the cover cutout.

Use a sharp paper scissors or X-Acto knife to cut the four tabs (the white lines).

Step Three: Score the box pieces following the pink lines on the pattern. For the bottom of the box (the larger piece), you’ll be scoring 1.25″ in from each side. For the lid piece, place the piece of paper slightly in from the edge of the score board and score at 3/4″ in from each side.

Step Four: Use an X-Acto knife to carefully cut out the opening in the cover. Lay the pattern directly on top of the paper and cut through both layers. If you prefer to cut through one layer, cut out the insert on the pattern first. You can use a ruler to help guide your knife on straight edges. You can cut out a the heart shape or cut out the entire square opening.

Step Six: Use Scor-Tape, or another strong adhesive, to adhere the small paper square to the inside of the cover. I used 1/8″ Scor-Tape.

Fill them with Valentine’s Day candy, cookies or any small treat or gift! If the treats are not wrapped you can place a piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the box or wrap them in food safe paper. If using these boxes for a small gift, try wrapping the gifts in colorful tissue paper and use clear craft plastic so the tissue paper shows through the box lid.
