Halloween Pumpkin Carving Ideas (1)

In case you’re in a hurry…

This is the Dremel I used to carve these pumpkins. It’s a great tool to use for various wood crafts too!

What is the easiest pumpkin to carve?

When I am picking out my pumpkin to carve, I look for a medium-sized one with a decent-looking stem. I do not like the really big pumpkins because they normally have a thick wall that makes carving a much harder chore than it should be.

If you go too small they can be a little too tough because they have not ripened enough yet. I also look for ones that are as symmetrical as possible, since pumpkins grow on the ground, the larger they get the more they get positioned on one side which normally ends up growing flat on that side. Stay away from ones that have signs of bruising and soft spots, as once you open them up they will tend to rot faster.

How do you carve a pumpkin step by step?

First pick out the image you want to carve on the pumpkin, print it out, and tape it to the pumpkin. I like to carve outside, grab your tools, and head outside. I use a pushpin to trace the outline, using the pushpin, follow the lines of your printout/stencil and make a dotted image for which you will later cut out. Then grab your pumpkin carver/ knife and cut a hole large enough for your hand to fit in either at the bottom or at the top where the stem is located.

If your pumpkin sits a little funky, cut the hole in the bottom so it is will sit more even. After you have opened a hole, grab your scraper and clean out the pumpkin guts and seeds. Some people just throw the seeds away but you can separate the seeds from the guts and toast them for a seasonal snack.

What’s the best tool to carve a pumpkin?

There are so many options when it comes to tools to use when carving, for instance, you can go to the dollar store and grab a carving kit that will do the job or you can grab a rotary tool and get precision lines and circles. You can use a pairing knife and ice cream scooper along with a rotary tool that makes shading so much easier. Of course, if you are not comfortable with tools and cutting, some good ole paint will look great too!

Where do you cut a hole in a pumpkin?

If you are using battery-operated candles or lights inside your pumpkin, then cutting a hole in the bottom is fine. Cutting the bottom will If you plan to use real candles inside the pumpkin, cut the top or poke holes in the top so the smoke can relsease.
