Getting Started: Essential Crochet Supplies

Before we dive into the cute and cuddly, let’s gather the essentials.
Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Crochet hook: Choose a hook size appropriate for your yarn weight. Usually 2-3 sizes smaller than what’s recommended on the label, as you’ll create tighter stitches which don’t show stuffing through. The most commonly used weight for amigurumi is worsted weight yarn [4], bulky [5] or super bulky [6]. A size H [5mm] or I [5.5mm] hook is a great starting point for super bulky [6] weight.
  • Yarn: Cotton yarn is a popular choice for amigurumi as it creates a nice, defined stitch definition. A Washable, acrylic yarn is another option, especially for those with allergies. You’ll see in a lot of my patterns, that I prefer to use a super bulky (6) chenille style yarn, because I love the squishiness and cozy fabric it produces! My personal recommendation is:Hobbii Honey Bunny Yarn (6), Premier Parfait Chunky (6), Loops and Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite (6)
  • Filler stuffing: For an eco-option, you can use yarn or fabric scraps to stuff your amigurumi. However, I prefer Polyfil! This provides volume and helps your creation maintain form. Pack it firmly for best results.
  • Yarn needle: Although No-Sew crochet amigurumi patterns usually don’t have much need for tapestry needles, having a blunt needle to hand, will help you weave in yarn ends for a clean finish.
  • Stitch markers: These handy little tools help you keep track of the beginning and end of rounds (continuous circles) in your crochet project. I prefer to use Locking Stitch Markers
  • Safety eyes (optional): These pre-made eyes are a great way to add life to your amigurumi creations, especially for children’s toys. Remember to choose a size that fits your project’s scale. I regularly use eyes anywhere from 8mm up to 24mm. My favourite sizes are 10, 12 and 15mm.

Additionally, embroidery floss for detailed facial features and sharp scissors for cutting yarn, are helpful tools to have on hand too.

Check out my Amazon Storefronts to view some of my favourite tools and notions!

Basic Skills of Amigurumi

Now, let’s talk about the basic skills you’ll need. When you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to choose beginner crochet amigurumi patterns – like most of those mentioned in this post! And then, Mastering just a few simple crochet stitches will open the door to a world of amigurumi possibilities.

  • Single crochet (sc): The foundation of most amigurumi projects.
  • Increase (inc): This stitch helps you create the rounded shapes characteristic of amigurumi. There are different types of increases, but a single crochet increase (sc inc) is a good starting point.
  • Decrease (dec): Used to shape your amigurumi, creating defined features like heads and limbs. The invisible decrease (inv dec) is a popular choice for a neat finish.

Many beginner-friendly patterns only require these basic skills, so you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can start creating!

The Magic of No-Sew Amigurumi: Why It’s Perfect for Beginners

The “best part” about no-sew amigurumi patterns is exactly what the name suggests – no sewing required! Here’s why it’s a great choice for beginners:

  • Simplified construction: No more fiddling with needle and thread! No-sew patterns involve crocheting the pieces in a way that allows them to be simply stuffed and then tucked neatly into themselves.
  • Reduced frustration: Eliminating the sewing step reduces the potential for frustration, especially for complete beginners who are still getting comfortable with their crochet skills.
  • Faster completion: With no sewing involved, your adorable amigurumi creations come together much quicker, offering a satisfying “quick win” for your first project. This applies, no matter your skill level!

So, if you’re ready to create something cute without the stress of sewing, no-sew amigurumi patterns are a fantastic way to begin your new crocheting hobby!

Assembly And Finishing Touches

I provide a free video tutorial for many of these skills, that might be new to you:

Use fiberfill to stuff body and limbs moderately for a cuddly, yet defined shape.

For amigurumi patterns that aren’t No-Sew! Pin limbs in place, then stitch edges securely for a strong attachment.

Attach safety eyes, noses, etc. with precision. Or embroider your own, for child safety. Reinforce these features, for durability. (Embroidered Eyes Tutorial, Sleepy Eye Embroidery Tutorial)

  • Final Touches & Inspection:
    • Stitch on any remaining details (wings, ears, tails, hats, buttons).
    • Check for stray yarn ends, secure all parts, and confirm stuffing doesn’t show.
  • Safety for Little Ones:
    • Consider stitched features and washable, hypoallergenic yarn. Sometimes the best yarn for young children.
    • Avoid unattached clothing or small parts that could be choking hazards.

Something to Look Forward to: Beyond the Basics

Achieve seamless transitions for intricate details.

Create smooth surfaces without bumps or gaps.
